nervous system
• at 21 days after viral cre injection, apoptosis of newborn dentate granule neurons is increased
• however, when viral cre injection is done at P0, no increase in apoptosis is seen
• following viral cre injection, newborn neurons with loss of expression migrate farther into the granule cell layer
• viral cre expression at 3 weeks after birth, showed loss of neurons but normal positioning
• at 14 and 21 days post viral cre injection, the number of newborn dentate granule neurons is reduced
• following viral cre injection, neurons with loss of expression have larger cell bodies and longer and more branched dendrites
• viral cre expression at 28 and 31 days, but not at 56 or 0 days, of age led to impaired survival of newborn neurons
• viral cre injection at P0 does not increase the size of the cell body
• following viral cre injection, neurons with loss of expression have longer and more branched dendrites
• however, no difference in spine density is seen
• cre injection at P0 also results in increased dendritic length and node number at 21 days and 12 weeks post injection
• after viral cre induced deletion, action potential thresholds are increased, amplitudes are smaller, and maximal frequencies tend to be reduced

behavior/neurological
N
• following injection of adults with cre to delete expression in adult-born dentate granule neurons, no defects in spatial memory, contextual fear discrimination, or depression-like behavior are seen
• in an elevated plus maze, mice with viral cre-induced loss of expression in adult-born neurons spend less time in the open arms even at 10 weeks after injection of cre
• however, time spent in the center of an open field is similar to controls
• viral cre injection at P0 did not result in increased anxiety-related behavior

cellular
• at 21 days after viral cre injection, apoptosis of newborn dentate granule neurons is increased
• however, when viral cre injection is done at P0, no increase in apoptosis is seen
• following viral cre injection, newborn neurons with loss of expression migrate farther into the granule cell layer
