hearing/vestibular/ear
• planar polarized organization of vestibular hair cells in the medial regions of the utricle is severely disrupted
• however, auditory hair cells in the cochleae are not impacted
• however, the intrinsic polarity of the majority of vestibular hair cells remains intact
• the bundles of hair cells in the striolar and medial extrastriolar regions of the utricle are randomly oriented relative to each other while lateral hair cells remain correctly oriented
• misoriented bundles are also seen in the outer region of the saccule and within the semi-circular canal cristae
• bundle orientation is disorganized rather than reversed and the extent of misorientation is greater in the maculae than in the cristae
