• in response to a diabetogenic streptozotocin dose, null mice do not develop hyperglycemia in the first 7 days and show only a transient 1.7-fold blood glucose increase over untreated control levels on day 21, compared to treated controls which have a gradual increase in blood glucose over this period and still exhibit elevated levels on day 60
• streptozotocin treatment causes beta cell death and atrophy in pancreatic islets from treated wild-type mice over 60 days of observation, but islets from null mice show very little damage
