• 7 of 27 mice were born dead with very abnormal lungs

• in all mice
• mice exhibit lung hypercellularity due to a 4-fold increased in proliferation in the lungs
• the lungs of mice that die at birth exhibit a 3-fold increase in the number of neuroendocrine cell clusters in their lungs compared to in wild-type mice
• at P0, epithelial progenitor cells persist in the lungs unlike in wild-type mice
• differentiation of proximal cells is delayed compared to in wild-type mice
• at E18.5, the number of alveoli is decreased compared to in wild-type mice and are packed with numerous epithelial cells
• no air is found within the lungs of mice that die at birth
