• 100% of mice develop cataract by 28-38 days of age
• cataract development begins with a clear demarcation of the inner nuclear area, and continues with the ejection of primary fiber cells through the posterior suture into the vitreous and the major portion of the lens, including the epithelium and cortex, remains transparent, with some degree of cloudiness in the nuclear regions
• at early stages of cataract development, the anterior portion of the lens is less affected than the posterior region, the lens capsule is ruptured at the posterior pole of the lens, with primary fiber cells expelled into the vitreous, and the epithelial cells are abnormal and vacuolated
• at advanced stage of cataract, the lenses are asymmetrical and have large vacuoles
