N normal phenotype
endocrine/exocrine glands
• reduction in corpus luteum number or their absence
• arrest of follicular development
• ovaries from about 25% of 9 month old mice are enlarged due to formation of ovarian cysts
• about 25% of females exhibit ovarian cysts filled with serous fluid at 9 months of age
• ovarian cysts often develop bilaterally

adipose tissue
• females accumulate more visceral fat, but less brown adipose tissue, than males, while subcutaneous fat mass increases similarly in females and males (J:230172)
• increase in adipose tissue mass (J:230172)
• ovaries are surrounded by overgrowth of adipose tissue and periovarian adipose tissue closely associated with the ovarian epithelial surface (J:242981)
• males show increased fat accumulation in brown adipose tissue
• reduction in mitochondrial size, but not content, in brown adipose tissue
• white adipose tissue from males shows increased distribution of crown-like structures, indicating macrophage infiltration
• increase in mitochondrial number and distribution throughout the cytoplasmic rim of white adipocytes
• mitochondria in adipocytes is predominately elongated instead of round
• adipocyte hypertrophy in white adipose tissue
• insulin-induced free fatty acid uptake by white adipose tissue is decreased in males
• however, no change in fatty acid oxidation is seen

integument

reproductive system
• reduction in corpus luteum number or their absence
• arrest of follicular development
• ovaries from about 25% of 9 month old mice are enlarged due to formation of ovarian cysts
• about 25% of females exhibit ovarian cysts filled with serous fluid at 9 months of age
• ovarian cysts often develop bilaterally
• 25% of females become infertile by 9 months of age
• reduction in fecundity with aging
• litter sizes at 9 months of age are greatly reduced

behavior/neurological
• reduction in horizontal activity

growth/size/body
• ovaries from about 25% of 9 month old mice are enlarged due to formation of ovarian cysts
• about 25% of females exhibit ovarian cysts filled with serous fluid at 9 months of age
• ovarian cysts often develop bilaterally
• mice gain weight beginning at around 1 month of age and become obese by 2-3 months of age (J:230172)
• however, food intake is normal (J:230172)
(J:242981)

homeostasis/metabolism
• serum estradiol levels are elevated
• however, serum luteinizing hormone and testosterone levels are normal during ovarian cyst development
• in fasting and fed males
• serum insulin levels are higher in fasted and fed males but not in females
• increase in leptin levels in males
• decrease in serum cholesterol levels in females
• increase in free fatty acid levels in fed males
• decrease in serum glycerol levels in fasted and fed females
• decrease in serum triglyceride levels in fasted and fed females
• males, but not females, have impaired glucose tolerance
• males, but not females, have impaired insulin tolerance
• increase in adiponectin levels in females but not males (J:230172)
• 9 month old mice exhibit an increase in adiponectin levels (J:242981)
• however, mice exhibit normal glucose homeostasis and insulin sensitivity and normal leptin and resistin levels at 9 months of age (J:242981)
