reproductive system
• individual fetuses from mutant dams are smaller than fetuses from control pregnancies, indicating intrauterine growth restriction
• however, the number of fetal-placental units per pregnancy and placental weights are comparable to controls and no differences in the thickness of the labyrinth or spongiotrophoblast layers are seen
• dams exhibit renal pathology and dysfunction at the end of gestation, impaired relaxation of conduit arteries in response to acetylcholine, increased blood pressure during pregnancy, and smaller fetus size
cardiovascular system
• heart rate is not as elevated in mutant pregnant dams as it is in pregnant controls
• pregnant females show mildly elevated blood pressure as the normal pregnancy induced reduction in blood pressure is not seen
• however, overt hypertension during pregnancy is not seen
• conduit arteries (aortae) from pregnant females exhibit impaired relaxation to acetylcholine but normal relaxation response to sodium nitroprusside
• however, second-order branches of mesenteric arteries exhibit normal relaxation responses to both acetylcholine and sodium nitroprusside
homeostasis/metabolism
• about 50% increase in urine protein is seen in urine collected from dams on gestational day 17
muscle
• conduit arteries (aortae) from pregnant females exhibit impaired relaxation to acetylcholine but normal relaxation response to sodium nitroprusside
• however, second-order branches of mesenteric arteries exhibit normal relaxation responses to both acetylcholine and sodium nitroprusside
renal/urinary system
• about 50% increase in urine protein is seen in urine collected from dams on gestational day 17
• pathognomonic glomerular endotheliosis is seen in dams at the end of gestation
