mortality/aging
• about 80% of mice injected intramuscularly with diphtheria toxin (DT) die within 10 days after DT injection

cardiovascular system
• 1.9-fold increase in cross-sectional areas of cardiomyocytes 14 days after DT injection, indicating that cardiomyocytes which do not express the transgene and survive DT administration, undergo hypertrophic cell growth
• hearts show degenerated cardiomyocytes surrounded by inflammatory cells (macrophages) 7 days after DT injection
• myocardial cell death in DT injected mice that is primarily due to autophagy and not apoptosis
• 7 days after DT injection, heart to body weight ratios are about 1.3-fold increased
• interstitial fibrosis in DT-treated hearts
• 7 days after DT injection, mice exhibit global chamber dilatation with wall thinning
• 7 days after DT injection, mice exhibit a 2.4-fold reduction in fractional shortening
• 7 days after DT injection, mice exhibit an approximate 1.3-fold increase in the left ventricular end-diastolic dimension and a 1.5-1.7-fold decrease in left ventricular wall thickness, and a 2.4-fold reduction in fractional shortening

homeostasis/metabolism
• 7 days after DT injection, mice exhibit atrial thrombus

muscle
• 1.9-fold increase in cross-sectional areas of cardiomyocytes 14 days after DT injection, indicating that cardiomyocytes which do not express the transgene and survive DT administration, undergo hypertrophic cell growth
• hearts show degenerated cardiomyocytes surrounded by inflammatory cells (macrophages) 7 days after DT injection
• myocardial cell death in DT injected mice that is primarily due to autophagy and not apoptosis
• 7 days after DT injection, mice exhibit a 2.4-fold reduction in fractional shortening

growth/size/body
• 7 days after DT injection, heart to body weight ratios are about 1.3-fold increased

cellular
• interstitial fibrosis in DT-treated hearts
