• mice exhibit decreased tissue resistance
• pressure-volume loops show a leftward/upward deflection indicating emphysematous lung physiology
• distinct lung immune cell populations show increased apoptosis, including CD11b+/CD11c+ and CD11b+/CD11c- cells, but not alveolar macrophages (CD11b-/CD11c+/SiglecF+)
• however, no differences in apoptosis is seen in endothelial, epithelial, or mesenchymal cells
• mice develop histologic (increased airspace size), functional, and radiographic finding consistent with pulmonary emphysema, independent of chronic cigarette smoke exposure
• the emphysema seen in mice is not exacerbated by exposure to chronic cigarette smoke
• mice exhibit decreased lung hysteresis
• mice show increased lung volumes and decreased lung density

cellular
