reproductive system
• sperm number is reduced by 98%
• the few sperm that are found are malformed; sperm deformities are heterogenous, with poorly formed heads, shorter midpieces, and truncated and infrequently forked tails, indicating oligoteratozoospermia
• sperm exhibit flagella deformities
• infrequent forked tails
• outer dense fibers are abnormally numbered and organized in most of the mid-pieces and principal pieces
• missing or unorganized central-pair microtubules are seen in the primary piece
• poorly formed heads
• sperm heads from epididymis show bifurcation with dysmorphic chromatin and malformed acrosomes
• discrete-structure or irregularly shaped acrosome are seen in the cap and maturation phases of testes
• additional spermatocytes and spherical spermatids are detected, however the seminiferous tubules have a reduced number of elongated spermatids and missing mature spermatids
• the few sperm that are found are immobile
• males fail to produce any offspring in a fertility test
• however, mice show normal testis appearance and weight, and normal seminiferous tubule, Leydig, and Sertoli cell morphology
