Glossary Term | Biological Process |
Definition | Refers to a broad category of biological tasks accomplished via one or more ordered assemblies of molecular functions. Usually there is some temporal aspect to it, although a process event may be essentially instantaneous. It often involves transformation, in the sense that something goes into a process and something different comes out of it. Examples of biological processes included in this category are cell growth and maintenance, signal transduction, pyrimidine metabolism, and cAMP biosynthesis. In the GO Project vocabularies, Biological Process is a primary class of terms. See the GO Consortium site for further information. |
