Glossary Term Biotin
Definition One of the water-soluble B vitamins. It is useful in molecular biology as a chemical tag on nucleic acid probes or antibodies, because the biotin-scavenging proteins avidin and streptavidin bind biotin with high affinity. These biotin-binding proteins can be coupled to fluorescent dyes, enzymes that can be detected using chromogenic reactions, or colloidal gold, allowing detection of biotin-labeled probes or antibodies on Southern blots, Northern blots, Western blots, or cytological preparations.
