Glossary Term Primer
Definition A single-stranded nucleic acid that can "prime" replication of a template. More specifically, a single-stranded nucleic acid capable of hybridizing to a template single-stranded nucleic acid in such a way as to leave part of the template to the 3' end of the primer single-stranded. DNA polymerase can then synthesize a new strand starting from the 3' end of the primer and adding nucleotides to the growing strand by base complementarity to the template.
