Caption Development of collagen II induced arthritis (CIA) in Ncf1m1J/ Ncf1m1J mice carrying the H2q haplotype (**) compared with heterozygous (+*) and wild type (++) littermates. Mice were immunized with rat collagen II in CFA, injected intradermally at the base of the tail and boosted with an intradermal injection of collagen II in Freund's adjuvant at day 35. Panel A. Arthritis scores plotted against the different days after collagen II immunization. Panel B. Serum concentration of COMP used as a measure of ongoing cartilage destruction on days 40 and 102. Filled circles represent mice with arthritis and lines represent the mean values. #, fewer mice analyzed on day 102. Panel C. Morphological sections of ankle joints taken at day 102 after CIA induction. Sections were stained with hematoxylin and erythrosine (x100). Severe arthritis with cartilage and bone destruction in homozygous mice and milder destruction in heterozygotes and wild type control mice.
