Caption Panels a-b: Eyelids of normal-strain mouse fetuses. Panels e-f: Eyelids of gp/gp. Higher magnifications (b and f) show the fusion line of closed eyelids of the normal-strain (arrowhead in b) and the eyelid margins surrounding the oval gap between wide open eyelids of the gp/gp (arrowhead in f). Scanning electron microscopy of E16 gp/gp (g) show the rounded periderm cells are present in clumps around the eyelid margin (arrowheads) as in the normal eyelids (c), however there is a lack of initiation of the fusion line between the upper and lower eyelids. Histological cross-sections show the normal E16 eyelid fused closed (arrow in d) in comparison to the eyelids of the gp/gp which remain wide apart above and below the eyelid (arrows in h) which leave the cornea exposed. Scalebar (c and g): 100um
