Caption Compared with the +/+ control (A), advanced mineralization is seen in the bony ossicles of the middle ear of the Sox9tm1Crm/Sox9+ (B). In the dorsal view of the skull, ossification centers of interparietal and supraoccipital bones are expanded in the Sox9tm1Crm/Sox9+ (D). Advanced mineralization is found in the vertebrae throughout the vertebral columns of the Sox9tm1Crm/Sox9+ (F & H). Mineralization is also seen in the cartilaginous regions between the vertebral body and the pedicles of dorsal arches. (J). (K & L) Hematoxylin/eosin stainin of sections of caudal vertebrae from E15.5 +/+ controls (K) and Sox9tm1Crm/Sox9+ show the area of hypertrophic chondrocytes, indicated by arrowheads. Abbreviations: interparietal bone (Ip); supraoccipital bone (So); vertebral body (Vb); dorsal arch (Da); intervertebral discs (Id).
