Compared with the ridged and laminated appearance of the normal stratum corneum of the wild-type control (A), the stratum corneum of the Tgm1^tm1Kfyn/Tgm1^tm1Kfyn is thickened with prominent granules of flattened keratohyalin (B). In situ hybridzation of TGase 1 mRNA is localized in the upper spinous and granular layers of the wild-type control epidermis of 18.5dpc fetal mouse skin (C), but undetectable in the Tgm1^tm1Kfyn/Tgm1^tm1Kfyn epidermis (D). Keratin 14 mRNA is evident in a few epidermal layers, including the basal layer in both the Tgm1^tm1Kfyn/Tgm1^tm1Kfyn and the wild-type control E & F). Arrowheads indicate basement membrane.
