Caption | Ultrastructure of photoreceptors of 11 day old Aipl1tm1Visu/Aipl1tm1Visu and wild-type littermate. (a and b) Electron micrographs of wild-type and Aipl1tm1Visu/Aipl1tm1Visu mouse retina (magnification, x900). Both outer and inner segments are considerably shorter in the homozygous mouse retina. The nuclei in the outer nuclear layer of the homozygous mice are not arranged as a regular array, but are missing some nuclei and show early signs of cell death. (c-e) Although the majority of photoreceptors in the homozygous mice are short and highly disorganized (arrows in d & e), some photoreceptors with normal packing of disks and shorter outer segments are also found. In comparison, in wild-type retina most of the photoreceptors are organized and longer (arrows in c). Several vacuolar inclusions were observed only in the inner segments of the homozygous mutant mice. (indicated by asterisks in d & e). | ||||
