Caption | Electron microscopic images of Henle's layer of the IRS in dorsal pelage hair follicles on postnatal day 7 in molecularly identified wild-type (a,d), Krt71Rco13/+ (b,e), and Krt71Rco13/Krt71Rco13 (c,f) littermates. Images d,e and f are higher magnifications of the boxed areas in a,b, and c, respectively. Sections were taken at a level at which Henle's layer of the IRS is not yet fully keratinized. In the wild-type, linear bundles of intermediate filaments insert into desmosomal plaques (arrowhead in a; large arrow in d) and associate with trichohyalin granula (small arrow in d). In the heterozygous mouse, large aggregates of intermediate filament bundles are seen (large arrow in e). Some linear filaments are also seen associated with trichohyalin granula (small arrow in e). In the homozygous muntant mouse, the intermediate filaments in Henlye's layer of the IRS are arranged only in aggregates (arrows in c) without linear filaments near trichohyalin granula (small arrow in f) and only very short stretches in the immediate vicinity of desmosomal plaques (arrowhead in c). Abbreviations: Henle's layer (He); Huxley's layer (Hu); companion layer (Cl); trichohyalin granula (T). Scalebar: 1um | ||||||
