Caption | Neonatal (A & B) and 3 week old (C & D) mice stained with alizarin red/alcian blue for bone and cartilage, respectively, followed by alkaline digestion to allow visualization of the skeleton. Tg(Col2a1-PTHLH)1Ecw/0 mice are shown on the right and normal littermates on the left. A: Ventrodorsal view of intact skeletons, showing a profound absence of ossification in the transgenic mouse. Early centers of ossification are evident in the basioccipital and exoccipital bones of the chondrocranium and in the ribs. Ossification is more advanced in the clavicles. B: Details of pelvis, hind limbs, and lumbosacral and tail vertebrae in neonatal mice. Shortening and bowing of long bones is particularly evident in the tibia and fibula. Metaphyseal flaring is also evident. C & D: Long bones and lumbar vertebrae, respectively, of 3 week old mice showing persistent shortening and deformities of the limbs and decreased vertebral length. Abbreviations: basioccipital bone (bo); exoccipital bone (eo); clavicle (clav); tibia (tib); fibula (fib) | ||||
