E18.5 wild-type (A,C,E,G,I & K) and Sox9^tm2Crm/Sox9^tm2Crm H2az2^{Tg(Wnt1-cre)11Rth}/0 embryos (B,D,F,H,J & L) stained with alcian blue and alizarin red; lateral (A & B) and basal (C & D) views. The mandibles were removed to enhance the view of the cranial base. The basal (E and F) and lateral (G and H) views of the mandibles showed that, in the mutants, the morphology was conserved, but they were smaller than those in the wild-type embryos. The hyoid bone, the laryngeal cartilages (I and J), the otic capsules, and middle ear elements (K and L) were dissected out.
