A: Ventral view of the lumbosacral skeleton of a one month old wild-type mouse showing the normal pattern of six lumbar (L1 to L6) and four sacral (S1 to S4) vertebrae. B: Hoxd11^tm1Ipc/Hoxd11^tm1Ipc mutant mouse displaying an additional L6-like (L7) vertebra. The next posterior vertebrae have normal sacral morphology (S1* to S4*). C: A homozygous mutant mouse with an asymmetrical transformation of S1 (S0). On the right side the transformation is very weak, whereas the left half has a morphology intermediate between L6 and S1. The next posterior vertebrae are apparently all anteriorly transformed as in the previous specimen (S1* to S4*). D: Laterodorsal view of a wild-type specimen.
