Caption | A: Cross sections through basal turns of cochleae from control and Lhfpl5hscy/Lhfpl5hscy mice at 4 months of age. The homozygous mutant cochleae exhibit severe degeneration of the organ of Corti and secondary degeneration of spiral ganglion cells. B: SEM examinations of OC surface preparations from cochleae of control and mutant mice at postnatal ages P0 and P8, and from mutant mice at P15 and P50. In P8 mutants, hair bundle disorganization and some hair cell loss is apparent; by P50, few stereocilia remain, and most outer hair cells have degenerated in basal portions of the cochlea.
