Caption | Hematoxylin/eosin stained testes sections of wild type (A) and Bbs2tm1Vcs/Bbs2tm1Vcs (B) mice show that, whereas wild type mice possess numerous flagella in the seminiferous tubules (*), the homozygous mutant mice have no flagella. Some condensed chromatin, indicationg spermatogenesis, is detectable. Transmission electron micrographs through the tracheal cilia of wild type (C) and homozygous mutant (D) mice reveal a normal 9-plus -2 pattern of microtubules. In some cases, vesicles were observed in association with these microtubules in homozygous mice (C arrow). Kidneys from wild type (E) and homozygous mutant mice (F) are shown. Homozygous mice have numerous cysts, some of which involve the glomerulus. Scanning electron microscopic views of renal tubules from wild type (G) and homozygous mutant mice (H) showing primary cilia. Some cells from homozygous mice show abnormally tapered cilia.
