A: The number of periodic acid/Schiff reagent-staining mucous cells was reduced in the intestines of Mapk8^tm1Flv/Mapk8^tm1Flv Mapk9^tm1Flv/Mapk9⁺ E15.5 embryos, compared with control littermates. The villi also were smaller and developmentally immature. EGF mRNA expression was detected by in situ hybridization in the intestines of control E15.5 embryos but not in the intestinal epithelium of mutant littermates. B: The epithelium of the tongue of mutant embryos was immature at E18.5 with no fungiform taste papillae (H & E). C: Mutant P1 mice have immature lungs with thicker alveolar septae than littermate controls (H & E).
