Caption Coronal sections of developing palatal shelves of wild-type (A,C, E & G) and Eh/Eh embryos (B, D, F & H) at E13.5 (A,B), E14.5 (C-F), and E15.5 (G,H). Palatal shelves grew vertically at E13.5 (A,B) and began to elevate (C,D) around 14.5 in both wild-type and homozygous mutant embryos. Palatal shelves then contacted each other and fused at midline to form a complete secondary palate in the wild-type embryo (E,G). In contrast, palatal shelves of mutant embryos failed to contact and fuse, resulting in cleft of the secondary palate (F,H). Abbreviations: p: palatal shelves; t: tongue
