Image
Caption Hematoxylin/eosin stained 6 month old wild type (A) and Bbs1tm1Vcs/Bbs1tm1Vcs (B) seminiferous tubules show a lack of spermatozoa flagella. Hematoxylin and eosin stained 6 month old wild type (C) and mutant (D) retinas show a loss of the outer nuclear layer in the mutant retinas and degeneration of photoreceptor inner and outer segments. TEM analysis of a 5 month old mutant retina (E) shows disrupted morphology and disorientation of photoreceptor OS membranous discs. Connecting cilia are visible in sagittal sections (arrow). Connecting cilia were observed en face between the IS and the OS (F). Abbreviations: CH; choroid; RPE, retinal pigment epithelium; OS, outer segments; IS, inner segments; ONL, outer nuclear layer; INL, inner nuclear layer; GCL, ganglion cell layer; PC photoreceptor cells. Scale bars: A-D, 50um; E, 500nm; F, 200nm
