Analysis of tissue sections from extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle from Tfam^tm1Lrsn/Tfam^tm1Lrsn Myl1^tm1(cre)Sjb/Myl1⁺ mouse (A-C) and a control (D-F) mouse at 3 months of age. A & D: Hematoxylin and eosin staining. There are scattered atrophic fibers in the mutant mouse. B & E: Modified Gomori trichrome staining. There are numerous ragged red muscle fibers (RRFs) in the mutant mouse. C & F: Staining to detect simultaneous cytochrome c oxidase (COX)/succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity. The muscle fibers that appear blue in the mutant mouse are COX deficient and contain accumulation of mitochondria. Scale bar, 25um
