Histological examination of fat stores in control (+/+) and Lpl^tm1Bres/Lpl^tm1Bres (-/-) pups at 16 hours of age. A and B: Light microscopy of oil red O-stained sections from skin covering the right foreleg (x100) and back (x50), respectively. Note the severe reduction in subcutaneous adipose tissue in the mutant pup as compared with the control pup. Capillaries are clear in controls and are filled with stained lipid in the mutant pups. C: Light microscopy of adipose tissue near salivary gland (x400). Note the copious amounts of large, univacuolar adipocytes in control pups as compared with mutants, where adipose tissue is severely reduced.
