Caption | Electron microscopic analysis of longitudinally sectioned cardiac muscle cells from ventricular myocardium (x17,000). A: Sections from wild type myocardia display the regular array of myofibrils with distinct I-bands and A-bands, in addition to well defined Z-bands and M-lines. Sarcoplasmic reticulum is well developed, and most of the mitochondria have elongated shape. B: A transmission electron micrograph through a transverse section of ventricular myocardium of Myh6tm1Rbns/Myh6+ mouse heart. (x17,000). Although both samples were treated identically, the sarcomere lengths in the heterozygote are greatly reduced, and the M-lines are indistinct. The array of myofibrils is wavy and the myofilaments appear misaligned (arrows). The length of the sarcomeres is greatly reduced. The I-bands are indistinguishable and the A-bands occupy the entire length between Z-bands which themselves are thickened. The mitochondria in the plane of section are rounded and irregularly disturbed. A, A-bands; I, I-bands; M, M-lines; MI, mitochondria; Z, Z-bands; SR, sarcoplasmic reticulum. | ||||
