Caption Adipose tissue histology in Lpin1fld/Lpin1fld mice. Epididymal and interscapular brown adipose tissue sections were prepared from wild type and mutant mice at 1 and 6 months of age, stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and viewed at an original magnification of 330x. A: Epididymal adipose tissue from a 1-month-old wild type mouse exhibits typical mature adipocytes with unilocular lipid droplets. B: In contrast, cells from 1 month old mutant mice appear immature, with only small, sparse lipid droplets. C: At 6 months of age, mutant adipocytes contain somewhat more lipid, but are still reduced in size and often remain multilocular with numerous small lipid droplets in addition to a larger droplet. D: Brown adipose tissue section from 1-month-old wild type mouse showing typical lipid distribution. E: Brown adipose tissue in 1-month-old mutant mice contains sparse lipid droplets. F: At 6 months of age, mutant mouse brown adipocytes remain severely lipid depleted.
