Caption | Increased lipid accumulation in aortic lesions of Lpin1fld/Lpin1fld mice. Aortic lesions were scored after 16 weeks on an atherogenic diet by staining neutral lipids with oil red O. A typical lesion from a wild type mouse viewed at an original magnification of 40x (a) and 100x (b) shows lipid staining primarily at aortic valve attachment sites, characteristic of type I lesions. A typical lesion from a mutant viewed at an original magnification of 40x (c) and 100x (d) shows greater lesion area, extending beyond valve attachments to the free aortic wall, characteristic of type II lesions. Areas of calcification are also evident as darkly staining regions adjacent to the artery wall in (d). | ||||
