Caption Engtm1Mle/Eng+ (End +/-, Left) and Engtm1Mle/Engtm1Mle (End -/-, Right) embryos. Beta-gal expression driven by the Eng promoter was analyzed in whole heterozygous and homozygous embryos. At E9.0, embryos are of a similar size and their vasculature appears normal. The homozygous embryo shows an enlarged heart protruding forward (arrowhead). At E9.5, edematous pericardium (arrowhead) is observed in the homozygous embryo, which is growth-retarded compared with the heterozygote. At E10.5, the homozygous embryo is dead and is much smaller than the heterozygous embryo. Scale bar, 500um.
