Caption | Transmission electron micrograph of 5 month old flexor digotorum longus (FDL) tendon collagen fibril morphology on the left in wild type (Lum +/+Fmod +/+, A), Lumtm1Chak/Lumtm1Chak (Lum-/-Fmod+/+, B), Fmodtm1Aol/Fmodtm1Aol (Lum+/+Fmod-/-, C) and Lumtm1Chak/Lumtm1Chak Fmodtm1Aol/Fmodtm1Aol (Lum-/-Fmod-/-, D) FDL tendons. Histograms on the right show the freguency of distribution of fibril diameter. Relative to the wild type, all three deficient genotypes have altered fibril structure, which is the least severe in the Lumtm1Chak/Lumtm1Chak tendons and most severe in the double homozygous tendons. All of the mutants show irregular fibril contours and abnormal association/fusion of adjacent fibrils (arrowheads). Except for Lumtm1Chak/Lumtm1Chak tendons, all other demonstrate a significant population of small diameter (20-59 nm) fibrils (arrows). | ||||||
