Caption PAS/Alcian blue stained stomach sections from wild type and Atp4atm1Ges/Atp4atm1Ges gastric glands. Paraffin embedded sections from adult mouse stomachs were stained with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Alcian blue to analyze carbohydrate moieties. A: Mucous cells in the apex of wild type oxyntic glands stained bright red (arrows), indicating the presence of neutral polysaccharides. B: Mucous cells in the apex of Atp4atm1Ges/Atp4atm1Ges oxyntic glands exhibited the normal red staining (arrows), but mucous cells surrounding cystically dilated regions often stained purple (arrowheads), indicating the presence of both neutral and acidic polysaccharides, C: In addition to cells staining red or purple, a small cyst at the base of the mutant gastric gland contained cells that stained blue (arrows), indicating the presence of acidic polysaccharides and the absence of neutral polysaccharides. Scale bar: A and B, 50um; C, 20um.
