Caption | Analysis of skeletons by Alizarin red/Alcian blue staining. Calcified tissues are stained red with Alizarin red and cartilage is stained blue with Alcian blue. A: Whole skeleton. B: Superior view of the skull. C: Hyoid bone. D: Clavicles. E: Sternum with ribs. F: Scapula and forelimb skeletons. G: Caudal vertebrae. Compared with the wild type (+/+) the Runx2tm1Ldq/Runx2tm1Ldq (-/-) mice have defects in the posterior of the formation of specific cranial bones, particularly the basal part of the skull that is formed through endochondral ossification, as well as the distal appendicular and axial skeletons that form during the later stage of skeletogenesis (indicated by arrows). The Runx2tm1Ldq/Runx2+ (+/-) mice had no gross skeletal abnormalities. | ||||
