MAC-3 immunostaining was assessed in wild type (A) and Sftpc^tm1Swg/Sftpc^tm1Swg (B) mice at 6 months of age. Extensive infiltration with MAC-3 staining cells was noted in association with severe emphysema (B). Micrograph (x625) is representative of at least 5 mutant and wild type mice. Semi-thin sections of wild type (C) and mutant (D) mice were stained with toluidine blue, demonstrating alveolar and alveolar macrophage abnormalities. Exensive lipid inclusions were noted in hyperplastic type II cells lining the alveoli and in the numerous alveolar macrophages accumulating in the airspaces.
