Caption | Histology and immunohistochemistry of Nfkbiztm1Mamo/Nfkbiztm1Mamo and wild type mice. Cross-sections of the facial skin of wild type (A,D and J), young Nfkbiztm1Mamo/Nfkbiztm1Mamo (B,E and K) and aged mutant (C,F,G,H,I and L) mice. Low power views (A-c) and corresponding high power views (D-F) of hematoxylin and eosin stained section. The skin of the young mutant mouse had mononuclear epidermal and dermal infiltrates and moderate acanthosis and hyperkeratosis (B and E). The aged mutant mouse had more severe and expanded inflammatory infiltrates containing numerous eosinphils in the skin and subcutaneous tissues (C and F). Acanthosis, parakeratosis, and hyperkeratosis were prominent in the aged mutant mouse. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that the mononuclear epidermal infiltrate of aged mutant mice consisted of CD4+ T cells (G), CD8+ T cells (H), and MHC class II positive Langerhans-like cells that were dendritic in shape (I). B220-positive B cells and acid-phosphatase-positive macrophages were absent in the inflamed epidermis. The numbers of mast cells in the facial skin of normal controls (J) and young mutants (K) were similar; however, numerous mast cells had infiltrated into chronic eczematous lesions of aged mutant mice (L). Toluidine-blue stained sections (J-L). Magnification: A-C, x30; D-I, x150; and J-L x60. | ||||
