Caption Histological analysis of adipose tissues from high fat diet wild-type and Cav1tm1Mls/Cav1tm1Mls mice at 12 and 36 weeks. A: Routine histology (hematoxylin and eosin) was performed on several different adipose tissue regions of 12 week old wild-type (WT) and Cav1tm1Mls/Cav1tm1Mls (KO) mice. At this age, significant differences were only found in two tissues (the female subcutaneous/mammary gland 4 and both male/female hypodermal fat layers). B: The entire left-side mammary gland #4 of wild-type and mutant females was dissected and subjected to whole-mount preparation. Carmine dye staining of the mammary tissue allowed visualization of the ductual architecture and quantification of ductal density. C: Similar histological analysis of 36 week high fat diet wild-type and mutant mice. All adipose tissues examined were dramatically altered with the most significant changes occurring in the male/female subcutaneous/mammary gland 4 and peri-gonadal white adipose tissue (WAT).
