Phenotypes of Phgdh^tm1.1Shfu/Phgdh^tm1.1Shfu embryos. A-D: Gross morphology of Phgdh^tm1.1Shfu/Phgdh^tm1.1Shfu (-/-, A) embryos and wild-type (+/+, B) littermates at 9.5 dpc and mutant embryos with Type I phenotypes (C and D) and Type II phenotypes (D) at 13.5 dpc. As early as 9.5 dpc, mutant embryos are markedly smaller than wild-type embryos. Note that the Type I embryo in D shows the beginnings of degeneration. E-G: Hematoxylin and eosin stained sagittal sections of wild-type (G) and Type I (E) and Type II (F) mutant embryos at 13.5 dpc depict abnormalities in the mutant brain. Note that the olfactory bulb (OB), ganglionic eminence (GE), and cerebellum (CB) are missing in both types of of mutant embryos. Scale bars: A and B, 500um; C and D, 2mm; E-G, 1mm.
