A: Hemidesmosomes (HDs) [hd] are clearly defined in wild-type mouse skin. B: Higher magnification shows the outer and inner electron dense plaque of the HDs with keratin filaments (k) running toward the HDs. Beneath the HDs is the basement membrane zone (BMZ), which contains laminin 5. The mutant skin (C and D) contains rudimentary HDs (rhd) that are not well-defined. Higher magnification (inset in D) shows that HDs in mutant skin are more diffuse and less well-defined. | ||||
