Caption | Organ of Corti from 5-6 week old wild-type (+/+, A) and Atp2b2tm1Ges/Atp2b2tm1Ges (-/-, B-D) mice. The basilar (B) and tectorial (TM) membranes appear similar in all genotypes. Inner (IHC) and outer (OHC) hair cells and pillar cells (P) are identifiable in wild-type (A) and in the less affected regions of mutant (B) organ of Corti. More severely affected regions in the mutant show fewer identifiable cell types (C) or absence of identifiable component cells and architecture (D). Schwann cells and myelinated nerve fibers fill Rosenthal's canal (R) in the wild-type cochlear duct (A); nerve fibers in Rosenthal's canal of mutant cochlear ducts range from apparently normal (B) to greatly reduced (C) or virtually absent (D). The wide tunnel of Corti (T) typical of the wild-type organ of Corti (A) varies in regions of the mutant cochlear duct from wide to greatly reduced (B) or absent (C and D). Scale bar; 50 um. | ||||
