Electron micrographs of hair follicles in the skin of +/olt (a) and olt/olt (b) mice in the medial femoral region on postnatal day 13. The inner root sheath (IRS) is completely keratinized in both mutant and control. The short arrow (a,b,c) indicates the gap between the cuticula of the IRS and hair cuticula. While the cortex (CO) is fully keratinized in the control, in the mutant the filament bundles are still separated by electron-dense matrix material (long arrows in b and c). Sections were taken at identical levels of the hair follicle. Co, cortex; ORS, outer root sheath; IRS, inner root sheath.
