The arrow indicates the electron dense central element (CE). Right panels show Syce1^tm1Hgu/Syce1^tm1Hgu (SYCE1-/-) cells. Parallel axial elements (AE) were observed in mutant spermatocytes but SC with a CE was not found. LE, lateral element; AE, axial elements, CE, central element.
