Caption | Light (a,b) and electron (c,d) micrographs of luminal contents of the epididymis of wild-type (HSL+/+) mice (a) and Lipetm1Gam/Lipetm1Gam (HSL-/-) mice at 6 (b,c) and 8 (d) weeks of age. In the LM, the epididymal lumen of wild-type mice (a) is filled with dense sperm heads (circles), while the epididymal lumen of mutant mice (b) has dramatically fewer (circle). In the EM, some sperm heads appear fragmented and/or not bound by a plasma membrane (short arrows), while others appear normal but are embedded in a cytoplasm containing two or three flagellar profiles and show an abnormal acrosome (open arrows) or lack of one (c). More than one flaggellar profile at times occupies a common cytoplasm (long arrows). By weeks of age (d), the lumen contains very few condensed sperm, but an abundance of spherical germ cells (S). Occasionally, some spherical cells (star) show a clumped irregular chromatin pattern in their nuclei (N). E, epithelium; MV, microvilli. Original magnification ((a,b), 450x; (c) 4,500x; (d) 10,000x. | ||||
