Caption | Light micrographs of the testes (a-c) and epididymis (d-f) of wild-type (HSL+/+) (a,d) and (HSL-/-) (b,c,e,f) mice at 14 months (a-e) and 10 months (f) of age. In (a), the seminiferous epithelium (SE) shows a full complement of germ cells including elongating speramtids (squares). In (b), seminiferous tubules are of smaller size and while some reveal late spermatids (squares) others do not. Some tubules have an irregular profile and show a dramatic decrease of germ cells (solid asterisks). In (c), while come tubules reveal a more-or-less normal epithelium (hollow asterisks), others are grossly depleted of germ cells (solid asterisks). In (d), the epididymal lumen of the cauda region is filled with the heads of sperm (circles) some of which may represent degenerating germ cells, as well as normal and abnormal sperm heads. Lu, lumen; E, epithelium. Original magnification (a,b,d-f: 200x; c, 75x). | ||||
