Epidermis from the trunk of Sfn^Er/Sfn^Er mice. Different regions of the epidermis show, (a) thickened zone of irregularly shaped granular cells (G) beneath noncornified superficial cells (nC). (b) A spiderlike zone of cornified cells (C) within the epidermis, granular cells at the epidermal surface (arrows) with a "cap" of noncornified superficial cells and (c) a variable position and abundance of granular cells (arrows) appear among the epidermal strata. Widened intercellular spaces in basal and spinous regions are evident in all micrographs. x325.
