Note the reduced cell number and density in cultures from mutant livers (B). Bars: 100 um. C and D: Simultaneous detection of apoptosis and DNA replication in E12.5 fetal liver cultures. Primary hepatoblasts were stained for apoptotic cells by TUNEL (open arrowheads) and for cells replicating its DNA by [³H]thymidine incorporation (filled arrowheads). The number of apoptotic cells is increased in mutant cultures (D) whereas the number of [³H]thymidine-labeled cells is reduced.
