Degenerative joint problems were developed in the knee (A), the ankle (C), and the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) (E) of 3-month old Errfi1tm1.1Jwj/Errfi1tm1.1Jwj ((Mig-6-/-) mice, but not in the wild-type (WT) mice (B,D, and F). Arrows indicate the abnormal outgrowth of bony nodules on the defective joints. H&E staining shows that the rear limb joints of mutant mice have rough joint surfaces and narrowed joint spaces; multiple abnormal cysts filled with fibroblast-like cells were formed in the subchondrial areas (G).
