Caption | (A-H) Sagittal inner ear sections at P90 were stained with hematoxylin-eosin. (A and B) Outer hair cells (OHC's) and inner hair cells (IHC's) were present in wild-type mice (arrowheads in A) but absent in basal turns of the cochlea of Cdh23sals/Cdh23sals (salsa) mice (arrowheads in B). (C and D) Hair cells in the vestibule of mutant mice were not affected. Arrowheads point to the sensory epithelia. (E-H) Degeneration of spiral ganglion neurons was evident in basal turns (asterisks) but less pronounced in medial turns (arrows) (I and J) Activated caspase 3 immunostaining revealed apoptosis in hair cells of mutant mice at P30. (K and L) Apoptosis was also observed in spiral ganglion neurons (SGN). Scale bars: A-H, 80 um; and I-L, 20 um. | ||||
